I got to thinking recently about what excites me, and more generally in what excites people, and I’ve come to this conclusion: the things that excite us clearly reveal maturity and growth in our spiritual lives.
As we grow in Christ, worldly things and earthly pleasures lose their grandeur, and they just don’t excite us like they used to. Interest in outward appearances and the need for recognition fades, and other things take a more prominent role. Things like this…
1 John 1:4
“I rejoice greatly that I have found certain of thy children walking in truth…”
This resonates with me. I understand the excitement that the apostle John describes. He experienced great rejoicing; not because of impressive numbers, big ministry accomplishments, fancy lights or anything else. It was simple. Pure, undefiled excitement arising from a simple reality that only a growing saint would recognize.
Lately, nothing has excited me more than when God’s people do what’s right, when they emanate humility, when they walk in love, when they walk in truth. Repentance excites me. Brokenness.
As you grow, you’ll find little things bringing with them big excitement, and what the world might consider big, just won’t do it for you anymore.
What excites you?
I wanted to confess that I am a recovering addict. I used to be addicted to shopping, amongst other things. I still was a Christian; mike has taught me to try again. He cares about me. Jesus makes us love one another more then stuff..my fendi purse I still want isn’t as important to me anymore. Yes I want it. I love Jesus more and I don’t want my money..he can have it, but not the devil.
