1 John 4:6
“We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”
Hereby we know truth and error. How by? It’s determined by whether or not we hear the Word of God. It’s the ultimate “stupid” test. The child of God or so-called Christian that refuses to listen to God’s Word and receive it’s council, is by definition yielding to the spirit of stupid/error.
The smartest thing you can do is listen to and obey the Word of God, the stupidest…not.
And, for the record, listening to the Word of God doesn’t mean it always says what you believe. But rather, you believe what it says! Sometimes, that means we have to change what we think or believe, no matter how long we’ve had the idea or held to the tradition. If God’s Word doesn’t support it, drop it.
Error/stupid always holds on to beliefs, traditions, ideas that make it feel comfortable. They’re sometimes called ‘sacred cows’ and people are often unwilling to let them die to the truth. The truth is, it doesn’t matter who said it, how long it has existed, or how nice it sounds. If it doesn’t line up with the whole council of scripture, it’s error.
The Apostle John, and the other’s God used to write scripture, knew God, and it was wise to listen to them and still is. Today, those who know God, must first know the Word of God, and they too will speak what is worth listening to. It’s important that you know the truth so that you can recognize it. Otherwise, error can be easily disguised.
