The Christian life is just that…a pilgrimage. We’re passing through, and therefore, we must keep our focus on eternity. This is how the patriarchs of old looked at life. Such was the understanding of Jacob, one of the father’s of our faith.
Genesis 47:9
“And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.”
Our pilgrimage includes three things:
- Turning aside from the road most traveled…
This certainly isn’t the most popular lifestyle one could choose. But the believer in Christ absolutely has turned aside, and in so doing we’ve made the only decision that is truly rational; to surrender our life to the One we owe our lives to. - Embracing a temporary abode…
It’s not always comfortable, and it’s not always convenient, but isn’t it a relief to know that it is temporary. - Anticipating a permanent residence…
Finally, in this pilgrimage we understand, a permanent residence does await us. A city who’s builder and maker is God! (Hebrews 11:10). We are citizens of an eternal kingdom, and it is in the Lord’s Kingdom that our loyalties must lie.
Dear friend, as you journey the road less traveled, embracing a temporary abode, may your anticipation of that permanent residence grow and grow and grow! Jesus is coming and with Him we will for eternity reign – through Christ as more than conquerors, victors in Jesus name!
