Like all fruit of the spirit, self control is a Spirit inspired virtue. Folks get worn out when they try to produce in their own strength what only God can. Here’s the problem with our own efforts: they only scratch the surface, and no problem can be solved on the surface alone.
Our need for self control goes way beyond what lies on the surface. In our own strength we can try to control our eyes, and other fleshy appetites. But what we really need is a change of heart; where our spiritual desires overcome fleshy ones. This is what the fruit of the spirit accomplishes. It rises up from the inside, and we no longer want what the flesh wants.
Focusing on the Spirit and cultivating His fruit in our lives enables us to be under His control. Self control then becomes Spirit control. The key to self control is our connection to the One who provides it; the wonderful Holy Spirit.
Go below the surface today and discover what is broken on the inside, then ask the Holy Spirit to fix it. Don’t just medicate the problem. Solve it.
