We live in a world consumed by natural things, and our spiritual lives can easily become clouded by them. Fasting gives us an opportunity to set aside some of the “natural” and focus more on the spiritual. We fast in order to strengthen our spiritual lives, and to become more spiritually sensitive. This is part of God’s plan for us, and Jesus makes it clear in Matthew 6:16-18,
“Moreover when you fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; That you appear not unto men to fast, but unto your Father which is in secret: and your Father, which sees in secret, shall reward you openly.”
Notice, Jesus said, “when you fast…” clearly teaching us that fasting should be a regular part of our spiritual lives. We fast out of obedience to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
In this portion of scripture, Jesus also mentioned an open reward, promised to all who participate with the right heart and right motives. Because it is God’s will to reward us in this life, we fast in order to position ourselves to receive His reward.
Today, as you begin your fast, understand that it is an act of obedience to the Lord, and obedience is very precious to Him. Your heart and acts of obedience do not go unnoticed, and the Lord has wonderful rewards waiting for you. Be strengthened today knowing that you are obeying Jesus, and be motivated knowing that He has something special for you during this time.
