A very short summary of the story is that a teenage girl was strangled to death – yes strangled – by her father because she refused to wear the traditional Muslim head covering, which is part of the hijab dress code. On the CNN page you can read how a lawyer for the father said there was "more to the story than just cultural issues" and I agree; it’s not just a matter of culture, but one of cultural extremism.
The church has its own history with the head covering, though I don’t suspect that anyone was ever strangled over it. It did however cause a great enough stir that the apostle Paul had to spend some time addressing it in I Corinthians chapter 11. The big issue for woman was that they not dishonor their husbands, and since the husbands preferred the head covering, they were encouraged to cover their heads in church just like they did everywhere else.
In our church, none of the husbands feel dishonored if their wife doesn’t wear a head covering. Women don’t cover their heads in public, so why should they cover their heads in church? It is interesting to point out though, that our church is the only one in the area that doesn’t practice this tradition. In most other churches woman put head covings on, but they don’t know what the purpose is. They think it is to honor God, but that was never the issue scripturally, and so all they have is a religious tradition or you could say a cultural extreme.
It is a little humorous to observe when young girls and woman, married or unmarried, scramble to find something to put on their heads when it comes time to pray or worship. Bless their hearts.
