While it’s okay, and even encouraged by scripture, to be content with some things, other things absolutely should not be tolerated. One of those such things is contention.
Proverbs 17:14,
“The beginning of strife is as when water first trickles [from a crack in a dam]; therefore stop contention before it becomes worse and quarreling breaks out.”
Nothing can be more detrimental to the plan of God being fulfilled than strife or contention. Such activity, according to the Bible, is nothing less than demonic. (See James 3:16). And unless you want demons running the show, contention must be confronted and stopped!
We cannot be content with discontentment. If individuals on a team are showing signs of strife; signs like negative attitudes, complaining, or frustration with leadership, these behaviors must be addressed swiftly. Swift action should be taken because of the nature of this problem, which can go from bad to worse very quickly.
To confront contention, consider the following princples:
- Speak the truth in love
- As a leader, do what is required
- Do not react in the flesh, but rather respond in the spirit
- Address issues personally, and once resolved bring the matter to light as a team
- For repeat offenders, prayerfully consider their replacement
If you have wisdom to share on this matter, I’d love to hear from you.
