I often think of this, one great challenge of leadership and responsibility of The Church, to preserve the preciousness of spiritual things; things life The Faith and The Word of God in this age. At the time of history referenced here in 1 Samuel 3:1, we’re told that God’s Word was rare and precious, and we know the two go hand in hand.

“NOW THE boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli. The word of the Lord was rare and precious in those days; there was no frequent or widely spread vision.”

I believe at least part of the reason for there being no ‘frequent or widely spread vision’ was due to the fact that there was little demand for those things from the people. Because of little demand, there was little supply, which made the word of the Lord rare and precious in those days. Times have changed. Today, I find the word of the Lord in abundant supply, with frequent and widely spread vision.

Because of increased word-wide demand, the Lord and His people are answering with increased world-wide supply; modern technology contributing greatly to the ease of dissemination. All of this combined creates the potential for wonderful as well as dangerous times. The danger lying in the possibility of precious things becoming common, and thus ceasing to be precious.

Here’s the question I pose:

How do we maintain value, and preserve the sanctity of that which is spiritual, in the midst of (for lack of better words) this progressive move toward common place spirituality?

I’d love to hear what you have to say…
