Fearlessness is an ideal virtue, but if we’re honest, all of us could identify some area of fear in our lives. Even the fear of being afraid. The purpose of this post is to suggest that some fear is okay, and even vital to our lives.
Mark 4:41
“And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
The fear of God is one of the healthiest things we can possess. It keeps us in awe and awakens our senses to the might and power of God, which in turn should humble each of us. Being ‘fearless’ often means having no respect for our Creator or His creation, and this is anything but virtuous. Not only is this kind of fear good, but it’s also a necessity. It keeps us safe.
Are you afraid of the dark? The macho man says, “NO!”. Well, you should be. Not in the sense that you’re afraid of some mysterious unknown force that’s against you. You know full well what’s in the dark. Sin. Having an “I’m not afraid of anything attitude” is an easy way to end up in the place you belong the least, in darkness and in sin.
The child of God should run from evil, and you only run from what you’re afraid of. Fear, if directed correctly, propels you into the arms of a loving God. And their, in His love, fears melt away.
Of course, fear is not something you should live in. But it is something you should live aware of. Pretending that you have no fear is another way of saying you have no need for God. Come on, that’s just ridiculous. No, rather than pretend, be honest with yourself and the ones you love. It’s okay to be afraid, just don’t let you fears overcome you. Rather, take them into the presence of God, and allow His all consuming love to touch the root of the issues you face. With His help, you’ll be strengthened to face your fear and overcome.
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
1 John 4:18
What are you afraid of? Don’t see that as a weakness, but rather as an opportunity to be empowered by God. Take that fear to Him and let His love touch it today.
